Natural Remedies and Herbal Treatments for DIARRHEA

Grapefruit Seed Extract: This is a good herbal remedy to both prevent and treat traveller's diarrhoea. Not only does it fight against microbes, but it disinfects as well. It is best to use tablets or capsules rather than liquid. Take it three times a day. If the liquid option is taken, put only five drops in a glass of water.

Agrimony:

This herb was known to medieval herbalists for use in warfare to staunch bleeding. It has an astringent effect that works well against diarrhoea, particularly in the case of small children. Its low toxicity makes it a great remedy for children.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

Put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey into a glassful of water and drink the mixture half an hour before a meal each day before a trip. This should help prevent traveller's diarrhoea. Continue the practice during the trip.

Lemon Juice:

The juice of a freshly-squeezed lemon added to a large glass of water can kill the agents that cause diarrhoea, if taken three to five times a day. When a stomach virus starts to make the rounds, take one to two tablespoons before a meal.

Red Raspberry Leaf or Meadowsweet:

Teas, tinctures, or capsules made from these herbs contain tannins, which are astringents that work on the intestines. Take one-half to one teaspoon of the tincture, 1 cup of tea, or two capsules, two or three times a day.

Buttermilk:

Buttermilk is one of the most effective home remedies in the treatment of diarrhoea. Buttermilk is the residual milk left after the fat has been removed from curd by churning. It helps overcome harmful intestinal flora. The acid in the buttermilk also fights germs and bacteria.

Carrot:

Carrot soup is another effective home remedy for diarrhoea. It supplies water to combat dehydration; replenishes sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur, and magnesium; supplies pectin; and coats the intestine to allay inflammation. It also checks the growth of harmful intestinal bacteria and prevents vomiting.

Fenugreek:

Fenugreek leaves are useful in diarrhoea. One teaspoon of seeds which have been boiled and fried in butter should be taken with a cup of buttermilk twice daily. They are valuable in allaying biliousness. The seeds are also beneficial in the treatment of this disease.

Garlic:

Garlic is a powerful, effective, and harmless germ killer. It aids digestion and removes intestinal worms.

Wild oregano oil is an antibacterial, anti parasitic and anti viral.

Ginger tea can stop cramps and pain. Or take Ginger in capsules.

Charcoal may also be used for relieving a variety of ailments, such as indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, high cholesterol and intestinal bloating.

Do not drink apple juice this will make diarrhoea worse.

Boil 2 or 3 small coconut pieces in a cup of water for a few minutes. Drink it by spoon full all day long, and by evening you would notice some improvement.

Grind a lemon along with seeds and rind to a paste. Add a little salt and consume.

Combine together, 1 teaspoon of powdered ginger, powdered cumin and powdered cinnamon with honey and make into a thick paste. Take 1 teaspoon 3 times a daily.

Mash 1 ripe banana along with a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon tamarind pulp. Take 2 times a day.

To rid diarrhoea, heat a cup of milk in microwave (not to a boil) and drink.

In case of diarrhoea caused by indigestion, dry or fresh ginger is very useful. A piece of dry ginger should be powdered along with a crystal of rock salt, and quarter of a teaspoon of this powder should be taken with a small piece of jaggery. It will bring quick relief.

Mint juice is also beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea. One teaspoon of fresh mint juice, mixed with a teaspoon each of lime juice and honey, can be given thrice daily with excellent results in the treatment of this disease.

The juice of bottle gourd is a valuable medicine for excessive thirst due to severe diarrhoea. A glass of plain juice with a pinch of salt should be taken every day in treating this condition.

The pomegranate has proved beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea on account of its astringent properties.

Drink a cup of chamomile tea. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory effects and has been found to work wonders in reducing the pain associated with diarrhea.

Blueberries and bilberries (minus the seeds) can stop diarrhea naturally.

The root bark of blackberry is said to be very powerful in treating diarrhea. Mix one teaspoon of the blackberry tincture with water every two to four hours to relieve yourself of the manifestations of diarrhea.

Vinegar is another miracle cure for diarrhea. Take one tablespoon of vinegar every hour until the diarrhea stops.

Drinking cooled water with a teaspoon of cinnamon and sugar to taste.

Hydration is very important when you have diarrhea. Drink water mixed with one teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of sugar to restore the lost electrolytes.

Rest your stomach. Avoid taking in milk and milk products (with the exception of yogurt), beans, cabbage, bread and pasta.
